December 2013

Dear Friend,

This is the moment that we've all been waiting for:  The Westchester Children’s Museum lease is approved!

Thank you for your patience and your support in helping us get to this point.  We believe the site in the historic landmark Bathhouse at Rye Playland – already an attraction for family fun and entertainment – was worth the wait.  And the children's museum will be a major part of Playland’s exciting transformation into a year-round family destination.

Being a parent is amazingly gratifying but also very tough. Many of us are in a constant state of worry – we worry about school, friends, bullies, sports, strangers, illness, accidents, disabilities, just growing up.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a place where we as parents can go to feel safe and welcome with our children?  To see other parents in action with their children, to compare notes, to let our children play and learn in an environment that doesn’t judge them or us?  Children’s museums invite kids to create their own learning experiences.  That is what a children’s museum can do, and that is what the Westchester Children’s Museum will do for our diverse community.

We still have a lot of work ahead of us and much of that includes raising the $10 million needed to begin construction on the building (plumbing, electrical, heating/cooling, etc.) and exhibit fabrication and installation.  We expect to award a construction contract by next summer, with construction to begin in the fall of 2014 and be completed by the summer of 2015.  We are hard at work talking to individuals, families and corporations who care about the area’s children and know how eye-opening and world-expanding a children’s museum can be.

I ask you to consider the Campaign for the Westchester Children’s Museum in your end-of-year charitable giving. Your contribution to our annual campaign will go towards our building campaign, support our operations, enable our ongoing education programming to continue throughout the county, and allow us to start hosting programs on the Playland boardwalk even before we open our doors.  Please join so many others and show your support.

Now is the time!  Help us open the doors to this children’s museum that will benefit all our children and families for generations to come.
